Q: Hi, my grill is about 3 years old. This year I had to replace the 9V igniter battery for the first time. Now I am on the 3rd battery in 3 months. Why is it suddenly going through batteries so quickly? I only use the grill approximately once per week.
A: This is not a usual circumstance. Normally if an ignition module is bad, it just stops working. Possible causes for the shorter battery life to check:
- You must use Alkaline batteries. Do not use "Heavy Duty" batteries.
- Perhaps there is some corrosion or leakage from the first battery inside the battery compartment. I know the angle is difficult, but you may inspect the inside of the ignition module for any such signs. You might try using a pencil eraser to clean the contacts.
- Wipe any grease from the electrodes in the firebox that may have accumulated over time, that may be putting an extra load on the igniter.
If these do not result in any better performance, you will need to weigh the $40 to $50 (depending on the grill size) replacement cost for the ignition module versus your battery cost.
