A brief lingering gas odor can occur after a sand-pan burner is turned off because a small amount of gas can remain in the sand after gas flow stops. Without normal gas-flow pressure, that residual gas may not reach the surface to burn off immediately.

The fireplace damper should remain fully open for a vented installation.

If the gas odor persists rather than dissipating, the installation and upstream gas controls should be inspected for leakage and proper chimney draft.
