Q: I have a two-sided fireplace which has been used very few times as a wood burning fireplace due to a poor draft. Which gas log sets are safe to use?
A: If your fireplace has poor drafting issues (as most see-through fireplaces seem to have) that you are otherwise not able to correct, the only safe gas log set to use is a set designed for vent-free use. The vent-free standard does not allow the set to produce any soot, and has lower emissions due to the gas consumption limitation of no more that 40,000 BTU/hour. Vented gas log sets will produce soot that must exhaust up the chimney, otherwise the soot creates a health and property hazard inside the home.
